NORTH EASTERN COUNCIL ( NEC)
The North Eastern Council (NEC) was set up by an
Act of Parliament in 1971, with the objective for
securing balanced development of the Region.
Originally the Council consisted of seven
constituents viz:
Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, ManipurMeghalaya,
Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. By an amendment of
the Act
in December 2002, Sikkim has been
included as the eight member of the Council.
Composition of Members of
the Council:
The membership of the Council
comprises the Governors and Chief Ministers of the
8 Constituent States. 3 members, as well as the
Chairman, are nominated by the President (Sect.3).
The NEC has
been restructured in 2004 and has made the Council
as a Regional Planning Body and brought under the
Ministry of DONER, Government of India.
