DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES

Development of Natural water resources and revival of Riverine Fisheries under Pilot project

Systematic exploitation of naturally available resources such as streams, rivers, swamps etc, which are also readily available water bodies, will augment fish production in the state. Development of rivers/streams for fishery activities is expected to create not only natural habitat for rare/endangered species but will also generate awareness for the need to conserve, protect and ban on use of dangerous/hazardous chemicals/gears in our river systems.

Assistance to fishermen under FFDA (Fish Farmers Development Agency)

Under this Centrally Sponsored Scheme, a package of assistance is provided as incentives to promote intensive aquaculture in the state. It also includes setting up of hatchery units by private farmers.

Extension and training

Training and Extension is extended to create awareness and motivate fish farmers of the latest technical know-how of intensive fish farming to enhance fish production in the state. One of the important training programmes which is envisaged under the department is called Comprehensive training of fishermen by live demonstration. This training consists of pre and post management covering a period of three months in each district. Pamphlets, booklets, Training manuals etc. are also published and updated from time to time and distributed to the farmers.

Integrated fish farming

Fish culture along with livestock/paddy is encouraged to augment fish production and to uplift socio-economic status of the rural masses. Common carp fish seed at a stocking density of 7000 per hectare of paddy field are supplied to farmers at subsidized rate during the month of May to July. In certain potential areas where paddy-cum-fish culture can be successfully practiced, the department is proposing to construct permanent embankment to rear fish throughout the year to promote pisciculture and generate additional income for the villagers.

Fish seed production

To boost fish production in the state, the department is producing quality fish seeds from the existing Government farms and also procuring from other agency which are supplied during the period mentioned below:

  1. Common carp – From Feb. to May
