He said that though we have no technology it is time to start thinking and be aware about the prospects of nuclear energy for future generation. He said that being a mere graduate in engineering is not enough or sufficient and encouraged them to specialize in different fields like hydro energy etc. to produce more power energy as power requirement and consumption is very high. He added that the government will be ready to give support through financial aid at any cost if an engineer wants to go in for new areas of specialization. He also said that to maintain quality control in the developmental works in future the contractor should also be mindful of the technical aspects as there are engineers to assist. TRAINING  ON  PREVENTIVE  &  CARE  FOR  HIV/AIDS  CONCLUDES  AT  MOKOKCHUNG

A training on Preventive and Care for HIV/AIDS was imparted to church leaders in Nagaland on 25th & 26th August 2009 at Longkumer Kilem, Mokokchung. The training was organized by the North East Committee on Relieve and Development, in partnership with Life Fountain Centre, Alempang Baptist Church, Mokokchung, and was sponsored jointly by the United Nations HIV Prevention and National AIDS Control Organization Regional Office. On the 2nd day of the training, resource person, Rev. Dr. Banner Maken gave presentations on Stigma, Discrimination and Church action for people living with HIV/AIDS. He said that negative attitude towards people living with HIV/AIDS would result in deterioration of the life of an infected person. In this regard, Dr. Banner said that the role of Church leaders can be a motivation to bring about a change in the attitude and misconceptions of the people in the society towards People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHAs).

After the first case of HIV was reported in 1981, unlike other NGOs, churches all over the world gave little importance towards the campaign against HIV/AIDS, and as such churches in North East India too were not directly involved in the field of HIV/AIDS. Seeing the attitude of the churches, concerned NGOs made strategies to ensure that churches in North East India are mobilized to respond to HIV/AIDS and to achieve this objective, strategies of communication, visit, campaigning etc was shared with the churches in North East India. With great hope to improve attitude towards people living with HIV/AIDS, churches too tend to adopt judgmental attitude. When all these few piece-meal programmes failed to improve the attitude of the churches, another programme was introduced which the NGOs firmly believed that churches need to be directly and consistently involved in behavioral change, treatment and care in order to halt and reverse the trend of the epidemic. With these objectives, churches in North East India respond to HIV/AIDS through prevention and care intervention. With much effort and providing a wide variety of activities, achievements can be seen today, of which few needs to be mentioned. HIV/AIDS courses in Sunday School and in Theological Colleges from 2009, appointing counselors in the churches, sanctioning of money for HIV programme in the local churches, support PLHAs with rice, nutrition, money etc, setting up of separate ministry for HIV/AIDS, pastors and church leaders were trained and capacitated and home visits etc. The training at Mokokchung was a great success with Dr. P. Ngully, Rev. Dr. Benner Maken and Rev. Dr. H.M. Songate as resource persons, and overall supervision by the members of NGOs lead by Temsu S. Pastor, Mokokchung and L. Yapang Pastor, Shillong.

SPIRIT OF  MONGMONG  AT  KIPHIRE  ROAD  SHOW

(A DIPR Feature by Asangla Imsong, DPRO, Kohima)

The State Road Show at Kiphire from 2nd to 3rd September 2009 will be coinciding with the Mongmong festival of the Sangtams. The event will showcase the activities of the State Government marked by various cultural shows, exhibition stalls and music competition.

‘Mongmong’ festival is celebrated in the first week of September to invoke the Almighty’s blessings for abundant harvest. In olden days it was observed for six days, where different rituals and practices like ‘feeding of the three fire stones’ in the kitchen, killing of pigs and Mithuns and sharing with the family members and neighbours, drinking of special rice beers and sharing of cooked food with friends and relatives were observed. During this feast they sing folk songs and perform folk dances. Different types of traditional games are also competed during these festivals. Common social work like cleaning of the roads leading to the village water-well, Khetis and neighbouring villages are also done which signifies Peace and Unity.

Kiphire HQ is situated at 254 Kms on Kohima-Meluri-Shamator-Tuensang Board Road and it stands at an elevation of 896.42 meters above sea level in between two mountains-Saramati on the East and Jingkhu on the west. Kiphire District was bifurcated from Tuensang District on 24th January 2004 and is predominantly inhabited by three major tribes namely, Sangtam, Yimchunger and Sumi. Besides, there are Tikhir dialects speaking families. Mongmong (Sangtam) Tuluni (Sumi) and Metemneo (Yimchunger) are the main festivals celebrated in the district. The people are co-operative and their deep rooted faiths in churches lend a hand in social advancement. Their love to preserve traditional values and rich culture is also praise worthy. Dancing and chanting folk songs in rich varieties of costumes and traditional dresses are exhibited with great enthusiasm during their respective festivals. While preservation of culture and advancement in the church is commendable, the social responsibility towards Drugs Abuse, HIV and School-dropouts, who are endangering the social fabric in alarming proportions, cannot be ignored.
