WORLD  BAMBOO  DAY  CELEBRATED

Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA) celebrated the second “World Bamboo Day” at Nagaland Bamboo Resource Centre Complex on 18th September 2011. The agency has organized various activities to commemorate the daylong celebration.

MLA & Advisor, NBDA, L. Temjen Jamir who graced the occasion as the chief guest said bamboo is one of the oldest and most versatile building materials with lots of useful application in the field of construction particularly in the developing countries. The diminishing wood resources and restriction imposed on felling of trees, the focus shifted on the need to identify a substitute material (i.e. Bamboo), which is environment friendly and widely available. The World Bamboo Body is now making an effort to increase the awareness of this plant known as the “Green Gold”, he added.

Recalling the first ever ‘World bamboo Day’ celebration at Kisama last year, Temjen said hosting an International event of such magnitude was indeed a phenomenal task, yet the department took up the challenge and today, he said “We feel proud that we could successfully host such an event”. He highlighted that the State government envisages generation of employment for two lakh forty five thousand (2, 45, 000) from development of bamboo sector through the Bamboo Mission by 2020. The employment opportunity in the bamboo sector is anticipated to be generated from the primary and secondary processing sectors, harvesting of bamboos and in activities like training, transport, marketing and communication. While stating on availability of bamboo in the State, Temjen said Nagaland has 46 different varieties of bamboo species having the stock of around 4 million tons valued at Rs. 250 crores.  NBDA Advisor said that NBDA has targeted plantation in 50,000 hectares during the 11th five year plan through NBM, Govt. of India and have achieved plantation in 18,500 hectares in both government acquired land and private land.

Maintaining that bamboo is an important resource in the socio-economic, ecological and climatic context of Nagaland, he said our State has now taken the imitative to harness the potential of bamboo and its benefits. The State has announced the bamboo policy on March 15th 2004 and with it, the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA) was established to undertake the programme and activities of bamboo utilization of its resources.

Team leader NBM-IT NBDA, Norman Putsure in his key note address said that bamboo will be the changing elements for the Naga people and a sustainable raw material for the future generation and added that there is a desire among the Naga people to participate in the bamboo mission, which can be seen in the production and creations which are of high quality and international standards. He further expressed optimism that development of bamboo sector in the State would facilitate development and usher in new partnership with the rest of the world stressing that the” Green Gold “ has become more than important in this century in the backdrop of global concerns on ecology and environment and looming threat of global warming and climate change.
