that being agricultural students they have massive challenges to be messengers of
development whereby, he appealed to the students community to bring a change by
turning the state into a producing state rather than a consumer state. The minister also
said that most of our farmers grow domestic oriented crops, hence measures should be taken
to grow commercial crops which will boost our economy and in turn pave way for future
development so that many unemployed youth can be employed in other avenues other than
government jobs.

same function stated that 80% people of the state depends on agriculture. He urged the
agricultural students to be more active and try to bring about a change in our state

UNDP AIDED LAND AND ECOSYSTEM MANAGEMENT TO BE LAUNCHED IN THREE DISTRICTS
In an effort to
make a paradigm shift from the concept of Replacing Jhuming to Improving Jhum Practices in
an eco-friendly manner, the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) aided Sustainable Land
and Ecosystem Management in shifting cultivation areas had been launched in Nagaland
state. Having realized that shifting cultivation is a socially-preferred practice and is
often the most suitable form of agriculture for certain agro climatic conditions and steep
terrain, the five-year UNDP aided (Multilateral) Sustainable Land and Eco system Project
would be implemented in Mokokchung, Wokha and Mon districts initially and would cover
other districts later on.
The UNDP
Programme Officer, Lianchawii, New Delhi and Director, Soil and Water Conservation,
Nagaland RT Asang who is the Project Director of the project held a pre-launching
preparatory meet with officers of Agri & Allied departments from the three districts
at Tourist Lodge Mokokchung on 28-08-09.
Addressing the
meeting, Lianchawii said that the programme aimed at promoting sustainable land management
and use of biodiversity as well as maintaining the capacity of ecosystems to deliver goods
and services while taking into account the effects of climate change. She said that the
project would also target on minimizing too much pressure on land.
In his address,
Director, Soil and Water Conservation, RT Asang called upon the officers to make a
concerted effort to achieve the goal. He also thanked the UNDP Programme Officer
Lianchawii for taking keen interest.
The Inter-departmental officers had intensive discussions on
implementation of the programme to maintain the ecosystem and at the same time meeting
livelihood needs. After the day long deliberations the meeting decided to constitute
District Level Committees in each district to oversee the implementation of the project.

CONCERT TO BE ORGANISED IN AID OF COACHING CLASS
Ao Student
Conference (AKM), the Apex Student body of the Ao student community realising the alarming
rate of School dropouts due to failure to get through HSLC Examination, has been
conducting free coaching classes for the past five years for the detained HSLC students,
with an objective to guide and motivate them to strive harder and get through the HSLC
Examination. This is an effort of the students body to help the failed candidates continue
their studies and become an asset for the society rather than join the long list of
dropouts without any aim or direction and becoming a burden to the society.
The coaching
classes usually last for three months, starting from September to November. The coaching
faculties are normally remunerated through sponsorship from well-wishers, but this year,
AKM is planning to organize a open air concert at Mokokchung Town to raise fund for the
coaching class programme.
